Classic Live Steam of Yesteryear

Friends Models Yankee Shop castings live steam 4-4-2
On a recent trip to Waushakum Live Steamers in Massachusetts, there was a Yankee Shop/Friends Models 3/4" scale 4-4-2 simmering quietly on the lead track to the steaming bays.

3/4" Scale, 3-1/2" gauge Boston and Maine 4-4-2 Atlantic, designed about 1940 at Yankee Shop

A small, compact live steamer that's got surprising power and speed. One of "Yankee Shop's" more popular designs in the 1940s. Coal fired, Baker valve gear, slide valves dummied to look like piston valves. Copper boiler, 5-1/8" diameter. Was marketed back then as an easy first-time project.

Drawings Now Available!

The Yankee Shop originals from the late 1930s! From the photos you will see that this locomotive is loosely based on Boston and Maine 3000-series Atlantics. Baker valve gear is used instead of Walschaert gear, however. At the time, the Baker Gear was Lester Friend's preference.....he believed it was easier for the novice live steamer to build, erect, and repair the Baker Gear, than it was for him to do so on Walschaert.

These drawings are suitable for the person who already owns a Friends/Yankee Shop 4-4-2 and would like the drawings for repair purposes, or "just to have". Some minor details are absent from the drawings, and they have NOT been checked or updated yet....these are the complete set "as drawn" by Lester Friend. They are available for informational and historical purposes only, for those who want to buy them. They are not presented as "complete" in every detail, nor are they guaranteed to be "without error". These are the same drawings as were available from the late 1930s until about 1980 and they are presented to you here in that spirit. Lester Friend used to say "we have left some of the details out of the drawings, so that the builder can follow his own mind". He was not kidding.

Price $79 plus $20 USA shipping. For other countries, please inquire.

All the sights, sounds, smells, and thrills of "larger gauge". This is the backhead of the 3-1/2" gauge "Yankee Shop" 4-4-2 Atlantic that is shown above.

Richard Symmes runs his Yankee Shop/Friends Models 4-4-2 Atlantic at the track of Charlie Purinton in the 1980s. This particular engine has Walschaert valve gear custom-fitted by the builder; the Baker valve gear is standard on the original Yankee Shop design.

If you're interested in the re-release of "rough castings" for the Yankee Shop/Friends Models 3/4" scale Boston and Maine Atlantic, please make your desires known to me.
